Please respond to the following question in 100 words (approximately half a typewritten page):
Have you ever been the direct object of hate speech, or have you known a close friend or relative who has? What was your/their experience like? How has that experience (or the lack thereof) contributed to your own position on the issue of the legality of hate speech?

I know a close friend who has been the direct object of a hate speech. He was insulted and bullied because of who he was. He was a Russian African American Jew, with such a great personality. It all happened in high school and it was a new environment with new people. We both transferred from a small middle school where everyone knew one another and was accepting. But in high school some kids are very aggressive and mean towards one another. It was only the first day of school and he was already getting nicknames that are not very appropriate to say. I was terrified by the way people act, I did not know that kids could be this mean. At the time I have never experienced or seen such hate to one person in my life. On the other hand he did not care he blocked out all the comments and gestures and went on with the day. I think that the legality of hate speech should be banned but at the same time it should not because then what is the point of freedom of speech.
